The long-distance portfolio
If you've moved — even once — you have a long-distance friendship portfolio. Some of these friendships are worth maintaining; some have quietly faded. The problem is that most people don't audit the portfolio — they carry guilt about all of them and invest in none of them.
An audit fixes this. It tells you where to invest and where to let go.
How to do the audit
Step 1: List your distant friends
Write down every friend you'd consider "long-distance" — anyone you don't see regularly because of geography. Most people have 10–20.
Step 2: Rate each one
For each, ask:
- Do I want to maintain this friendship? (Yes / No / Unsure)
- When did we last talk? (Recently / Months ago / Can't remember)
- Is the effort mutual? (Both reach out / I always reach out / They always reach out)
Step 3: Categorise
- Invest: You want to maintain it, and the effort is mutual. These are your priorities.
- Rekindle: You want to maintain it, but it's gone quiet. These need a reactivation.
- Release: You don't want to maintain it, or the effort is entirely one-sided. These are okay to let go.
Step 4: Act
- For the Invest group: Share your findatime link. Set up a recurring call. The system maintains the friendship.
- For the Rekindle group: Send one message: "Hey, I miss you. Here's my link if you want to find a time." If they respond, the friendship is reactivated. If not, you have your answer.
- For the Release group: Let them go. No announcement, no guilt. The friendship had its season.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many long-distance friendships can I realistically maintain?
3–5 close ones, plus 5–10 occasional ones. Beyond that, you're spreading too thin. The audit helps you focus.
Is it okay to let a long-distance friendship go?
Yes. Not every friendship is meant to last forever. Letting go of the ones that have faded makes room for the ones that haven't.
How often should I redo the audit?
Once a year. Friendships change — people move, life changes, priorities shift. An annual audit keeps your portfolio current.
